Micro-blogging site Twitter has just launched a Bitcoin emoji. When users write the word Bitcoin or BTC using a hashtag, the Bitcoin emoji appears next to it. The symbol of the cryptocurrency was demonstrated by Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey himself in a tweet. He also showed off the platform’s newest feature in his Twitter bio as well. It contains nothing but the hashtag and the symbol. Dorsey also tagged Unicode in the tweet to encourage the community to use the new emoji. The launch of the Bitcoin emoji caused excitement among people who use the platform to share updates about Bitcoin. Many Crypto Twitterites tweeted to test the new feature. It includes Binance CEO, Changpeng Zhao.
The new Bitcoin emoji was added by Twitter after people urged the American microblogging site to release a dedicated icon for the cryptocurrency. Dorsey and his team have heeded to the people’s request and honored it. The idea was first mooted by virtual currency evangelist Anthony Ponpliano last year. The idea soon gained traction with the crypto community. The launch of the Bitcoin emoji has not come as a surprise as Dorsey himself is a big fan of the currency and spoke in favor of promoting the currency. Last year, he openly admitted holding Bitcoin.
A cryptocurrency is a digital asset. It works as a medium of exchange that uses strong cryptography. The Bitcoin network was created in January 2009. It hit the mainstream in 2014, allowing people to exchange cash for the cryptocurrency. In 2018, Bitcoin even became the cryptocurrency standard operating just like the US dollar operate in public currency markets. Meanwhile, there is a buzz about whether other social media platforms will follow suit. There is a possibility that Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook may introduce a similar emoji. Zuckerberg in the past talked about Bitcoin openly and now trying to get to the digital currencies industry. He is working on a project called Libra and claims that it will be a Bitcoin killer. He is struggling with regulatory issues and partners bailing.
